The Tanzania Watoto Fund is run by Stony Brook University’s International Academic Programs Office and benefits orphanages in Mto wa Mbu, Tanzania. Every summer, Dr. William Arens leads an anthropology-based study abroad program to visit and assist these orphanages along with clinics and schools. Fifty guests recently attended a benefit for the fund at Pentimento Restaurant in Stony Brook Village, featuring live African music, traditional cuisine and original Tanzanian artwork for sale. Over $3,000 in proceeds was raised.

Despite a delay from Hurrican Irene, The Hampton Classic Horse Show was successfully held in Bridgehampton. One of the largest horse shows in the US, it featured a number of events with competitors ranging from youngsters to Olympic veterans. The 6th Annual Summer Concert benefiting The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset (part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System) was recently held at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay and featured legendary singer/songwriter Carly Simon. AHRC Suffolk, a non-profit org helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, just held their 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk benefit on Pond Lane in East Hampton. The most advanced CT scanner on the Island, it is able to produce 3D images of body structures in much less time than previous models.
