The Village of Asharoken is a beachfront community in the Town of Huntington with a population of around 650. It is located on the isthmus that connects Eatons Neck and the Village of Northport on the Long Island Sound. Originally within the territory of the Matinecock Native Americans, Asharoken was known to the tribe as “Opcathontyche,” (“wading place creek”). When the land (within the parcel that included Northport and Eatons Neck) was sold to English settlers in 1656, the chief that cut the deal was named Asharoken, thus the modern village name. A quiet corner of the North Shore for a few subsequent centuries, Asharoken’s transformation into an upper-class resort town was spearheaded by Northport lawyer and landowner William Codling at the turn of the 20th century. He created a development known as Asharoken Beach and by 1915, the whole area was a thriving summer playground. In 1925, Asharoken’s property owners formed an incorporated village.

Being an isthmus, the entire village has spectacular water views and private beachfront property. There is public boating and beach access at Asharoken Beach and Crab Meadow Park in Northport and Hobart Beach Park on Eatons Neck. Nearby Northport has a wealth of culture destinations, such as the John W. Engeman Theater, for Broadway-style shows, diverse cuisine and shops and boutiques owned and operated by locals.
