Around Town: Old Westbury
Located 25 miles from NYC, Old Westbury continues to enjoy its status as one of the most expensive zip codes in the US, second only to Palm Springs. The Quakers who settled the town named it after their home in England and kept its bucolic landscape. The farms eventually became home to some of the country’s wealthiest titans of industry: The Phipps, Du Ponts and Vanderbilts to name a few. Old Westbury is perfect if you want a mansion on a few quiet acres. But because there is no commercial district, restaurants, shops and galleries require a ride—from your chauffeur, of course. The wealth wielded by the town’s families forced Robert Moses to reroute the Northern State Parkway to the south—the only deviation from west to east the NSP takes—due to concerns the traffic’s noise would destroy the idyllic landscape. Now that’s money.

Just south of the Gold Coast, this sprawling new home sits on more than four manicured acres. The house reveals itself at the top of a winding driveway. Park in the ample front court and enter through a stately pair of wood doors, sitting under a massive fixed window that allows light to flood the foyer. There are the details you can see and appreciate, like the curved staircase, wainscoting, dark stained wood floors edged with a contrasting border and creamy stone countertops over dark wood counters in the kitchen. Then there are the more restrained details: Radiant heating under marble floors, a plumbing system that stops leaks and a real slate roof to protect from the elements. The estate is a grand gesture that, while new, nestles into the opulent lifestyle Old Westbury is known for.
