Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center
(631) 438-0083, Patchogue
Is it just me or is there some artsy new series in Patchogue to announce every month? If you’re a Suffolk County bohemian type you may already know about Artspace Patchogue, the funky new building that was designed to give working artists an affordable place to live, create and share their art. At the same location, Plaza C&MAC is presenting independent films and music, with their latest venture being a singer-songwriter series on the second Wednesday of the month. October’s performers will be Mike Savino, Tom Fitzgerald and Charlie Haberle—and it looks like a November’s Wednesday night will be an all-female event celebrating women songwriters. With its hip architecture and avant-garde ideals, Patchogue is looking more and more like the Williamsburg or Park Slope of Suffolk County. However, you’ll be relieved to know that skinny jeans and a more-ironic-than-thou attitude are not yet required for entry.

To those who don’t think it is easy to find live music in Nassau, I challenge you to check out a few bars in Merrick and Bellmore on a Saturday night and see if you don’t find someone playing guitar in at least one of them. If Suffolk County is going artsy and hip, Nassau County is keeping it real by pairing beer and barbecue with laidback live tunes. R.S. Jones does exactly that, serving legit Tex-Mex food and featuring legit Long Island acts like Christine Sweeney, Breakaway and The Dead Tuna Band.
The Velvet Lounge
(631) 751-7575, East Setauket
On the North Shore, bands and DJs of various genres have earmarked The Velvet Lounge as a favorite place to play. The vibe is easygoing and fun. It’s totally cool to show up alone and get lost in the music, but you may make a bunch of new friends in the process with this friendly and outgoing crowd. Check the calendar to find the next reggae night, open jam or local original act… There’s something here for everyone.
