Costumes and make-believe own Halloween when the yellows, oranges and reds of fall take a decidedly darker turn. Inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow costume, John Angrisani, mixologist at Crew Kitchen & Bar, developed the Avenger cocktail around black vodka. “The drink is dark and mysterious,” Angrisani said. “It encourages people to come up to you and ask about it.” The herbaceous notes in the black vodka provide the backbone with the orange adding sweetness to balance out the pomegranate’s tartness.
2oz black vodka, like Blavod
1oz pomegranate juice
1oz Cointreau (or triple sec)
Two slices of lime
Squeeze the lime slices and throw the peels into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Add the rest of the ingredients. Shake then strain it into a chilled martini glass.
Black is the new black
Black vodka is created by infusing vodka with catechu, an acacia extract that has no effect on vodka’s flavor but adds an alluring color and a touch of smoothness.
