Now more than ever artists are heroic due to their compulsion to bring attention to daily realities despite limited commercial relevance. In the wake of the BP gulf oil catastrophe, Ruby Jackson’s works are testaments to the importance of our underwater world. Her commitment to bringing our deepwaters to the fore started decades ago, betraying both her prescience as well as her timeliness. The artist is horrified that “our waters are being decimated at a time when we’re just learning about them,” but maintains the forms are not simply topical statements of man’s connection to water. Instead, they are citations of endless depths of movement, ribbons of light and color.
