5th Annual Artist VIP List: Hector deCordova

Water color, acrylic, crushed paper

Author: Long Island Pulse | Published: Saturday, July 31, 2010

Long before becoming a pioneer in the Greenport art movement with his wife, deCordova was a well-established, self-made man and self-taught artist. The connection between earlier craftsmanship and later artistic efforts is organic: deCordova is drawn to nature’s materials tactually. Paintings are delicate and just like profound nature scenes appear brilliant in their intimacy, so too does this artist capture the largess of quietude. He calls this “painting from your glands.” And it is similar to the unobtrusive nature of artists practicing the delicacy of Asian techniques. At the same time, his connection to the classic Europeans is evident in his rich tones and sentimental compositions.
