5th Annual Artist VIP List: Candyce Brokaw

Mixed media, one at a time

Author: Long Island Pulse | Published: Saturday, July 31, 2010

The lady of polarity. Her art develops through stream of consciousness, motivated by her self’s need for healing. Yet her work with Survivors Art Foundation and the shows she curates are very much selflessly motivated. More than that, she invokes opposites in the method and the means: Animals like pigs and snakes, symbolic of self-deprecation and deception, are central to pieces that convey an elevated spirituality. Small pieces posit the largeness of personal healing. Figures are narrative, but in fact spontaneous. Results are neither conceptual nor ambiguous but embody the enormity of survival through the fragility of sinuous characters and pointillist brushwork.
