OAKDALE, NY – In celebrating the Annual Theme of “Globalism: One World” Dowling College is proud to present Poetry From Around the Globe on Monday, May 12, 2008 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room at the historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This event is free and open to the public. For additional information, please call 1-800-DOWLING or visit www.dowling.edu.
As the presentations for this year's Annual Theme on Globalism conclude, Professor Elio Zappulla of Dowling's English Department will close the series by reading a series of poems, largely in translation, from a wide variety of world poets from every continent. This will not be a lecture, but a reading that celebrates the glorious art of poetry, an art that transcends national borders and emphasizes the common humanity of all the peoples of Planet Earth.
Elio Zappulla is a Long Island native who has never lived anywhere else. He is Professor of English and Humanities at Dowling. In the past, he has served as Chairman of the English Department which is composed of outstanding and talented colleagues and some of the best adjunct teachers in the field. He has been associated with Dowling College for forty years, since the days when it was called Adelphi Suffolk College. He has a B.A. from Brooklyn College, an M.A. from Brooklyn that resulted from the award of a teaching fellowship, and a Ph.D. in literature and languages from Columbia University, where he was a scholarship student.
Besides his long association with Dowling, he also taught Humanities classes, Italian language and literature and French language and literature at Stony Brook University and Brooklyn College. At one time, he was a central office administrator in a Long Island School District. He has lectured extensively throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties, presented papers, edited newsletters, published a number of articles on literary figures, edited books on a variety of subjects from the philosophy of science, the future of higher education, and the problems of school administration to New York Civil Practice Law, the acting profession, and American World War II internment camps, plus some novels, poetry and plays. Several years ago, he made an English blank verse translation of Dante’s Inferno, which was published by Random House both as a Pantheon Books hardcover and a Vintage paperback.

HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES TO FLY KITES ON SOUTHAMPTON BEACH
TO RAISE MONEY FOR LUNG CANCER RESEARCH
* * *
“Kites for a Cure” To Kick Off 2008 Hamptons Season
With Symphony in the Sky at Coopers Beach Memorial Day Weekend
To Benefit Joan’s Legacy Foundation
This Memorial Day Weekend, more than 500 families are expected to take part in “Kites for a Cure,” a family kite fly benefit on Coopers Beach in Southampton, NY. The event (Saturday, May 24 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.) is hosted by Joan’s Legacy: Uniting Against Lung Cancer, which funds innovative lung cancer research around the country.
Last year more than 600 people came together to decorate and fly hundreds of kites over one of America’s most beautiful beaches to combat lung cancer – the nation’s #1 Cancer Killer.
“Kites for a Cure is the perfect kick-off for the summer in Southampton, a wonderful family-oriented event on behalf of a worthy cause,” said Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton. Epley is the Honorary Commodore of the event, and is personally familiar with lung cancer, having lost his father to the disease four years ago. “Kites for a Cure brings families together over Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate the holiday, honor those who are bravely fighting this disease and also memorialize loved ones lost – whether to lung cancer or any other cause.”
With a $25 donation, guests will receive a high-quality kite they can decorate themselves on site -- drawing pictures or writing names, wishes or simply sending loving messages into the sky on the afternoon’s off-shore breezes. The money raised will support Joan’s Legacy’s national lung cancer research grant program.
“Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, and we are committed to raising both awareness and funds to help find a cure for this deadly disease,” said Susan C. Mantel, the foundation’s Executive Director. “We are elated to host a joyful event to support our goals – a kite fly that will fill the beach with families and the sky with hope and beauty.”
Joan’s Legacy is named for Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2001. In just six years, the foundation has awarded $3.6 million in research grants to identify the causes, new treatments, and possible cures for the disease that will claim an estimated 160,000 lives in the U.S. this year.
Lung cancer will kill more Americans this year than colon, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers combined, and more women than breast, uterine and ovarian cancers combined. Yet it receives less federal research funding per death than any of the other major cancers.
“The stigma of smoking – the idea that lung cancer victims brought the disease upon themselves – created a veil of silence and shame around the lung cancer diagnosis that directly impacted funding for a cure,” Ms. Mantel said. “We believe that nobody deserves lung cancer – neither the 25,000 never-smokers diagnosed each year, nor the 135,000 current or former smokers. Bringing hundreds of families together to acknowledge the disease will help us change the perception of the disease, and positively impact research funding.”
Joan’s Legacy, a 501c3 tax-exempt organization headquartered in New York, has grown under the direction of Joan Scarangello’s family and friends to become one of the leading sources of funding for lung cancer research in the country. Increasingly joined by like-minded organizations and families, Joan’s Legacy is recognized for spurring new and innovative research projects – ideas that wouldn’t get off the ground without the seed funding Joan’s Legacy provides – the foundation has quickly become the venture capital source for important research into the disease.
For more information about Kites for a Cure, to reserve kites and RSVP to the event, or to learn more about Joan’s Legacy and lung cancer, please call 212-627-5500 or visit the foundation’s web site at www.joanslegacy.org.

Pro athletes from the Van’s skate team, including legends Bucky Lasek, Steve Caballero, and Christian Hosoi, will fly through the air in gravity-defying demonstrations of the best of skateboard, BMX, and freestyle motocross in a 60,000 square-foot “alternative sports playground” of ramps and jumps.
On the tour’s mobile music stage, some of the best alternative music artists from the greater NY area will compete in the “Converse Battle of the Bands,” for cash prizes -- with free live concerts throughout the day.
Fans can also enjoy autograph sessions with athletes and bands, and free sponsor giveaways. Admission is free and open to all ages. Event hours are: Noon-6:30 p.m.

Germanic Genealogy
The German Genealogy Group will hold its next monthly meeting on Thursday, June 5th at:
Hicksville VFW Hall—Post 3211
320 South Broadway (Route 107)
Hicksville, New York 11801
The program this month will feature “Westward in New York and Beyond” with presenter Dr. Joseph Lieby. Dr. Lieby will present factors that caused many to move into western New York and sometimes beyond. The availability of land through large land purchases such as the Holland Land Purchase, and military grants made the west attractive. The development of the Erie Canal made it easier to move west and do business in the western lands. Land records, military records of land grants, Canal Board records and other records of those early settlers are discussed to enable the researcher to find clues to their pioneer ancestors.
Dr. Lieby is a retired educator who has been providing professional research specializing in New York. In addition, he is involved in several genealogical organizations including the Orange County Genealogical Society, where he is an officer and the New York Chapter of Palatines to America, where he is the newsletter editor.
An Orientation session for beginners and newcomers will be held at 7 PM and the regular meeting will start at 7:30. GGG members and guests will have access to the building beginning at 6:30 PM.
Among the many benefits of membership are a newsletter published ten times a year, a database of surnames, a free translation service, a book and CD lending library, interesting guest speakers at the meetings, mentoring, a start-up kit of helpful information and much more.
We welcome all who are interested in researching their Germanic origins. There is no fee for guests and all are welcome.
